South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill is set to be the first Australian Premier to speak at an Equal Love rally on Saturday.

Equal Love Adelaide confirmed the attendance of the Premier who has previously announced his support for marriage equality.

"With Lara Giddings stating her intentions to legislate for state based same-sex marriage in Tasmania and Jay Weatherill here in Adelaide, becoming the first premier anywhere in Australia to attend a mass rally for same-sex marriage rights, this highlights how far the campaign has come over the past 8 years,” Equal Love’s James Vigus said.

“Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott are well and truly out of touch with community sentiment on this issue.”

The Equal Love rally will mark the eighth anniversary since the Howard Government amended the Marriage Act to specify that a marriage is between one man and one woman.

Weatherill is expected to speak at Adelaide rally for marriage equality on the steps of Parliament House which will be followed by a mass illegal wedding.

Premier Weatherill is yet to separately confirm his attendance as a speaker.
