The third annual Gay & Lesbian Outrageous, Ridiculous and Ignorant Comment Awards (or GLORIAs) due to take place next week at NSW Parliament House has been postponed until sometime later this year.

Initially scheduled for the night of Thursday, May 17 to coincide with International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO), a message posted yesterday on the Facebook page and website for the awards ceremony said the event had been postponed until further notice.

Labor MLC Penny Sharpe, who was instrumental in setting up the GLORIAs in 2010, told SX this year’s event would take place in coming months.

“The GLORIAs will definitely be happening later in the year.

“There have been timing and cost issues with staging the event at Parliament House,” she said.

“I am committed to running it at Parliament house so we are looking at a revamped format – with still plenty of laughs and entertainment – later in the year.”

Despite the postponement, nominations remain open for the awards which will be given in six categories – Media, Sport, Politics/Law, Religion, Silliest GLBTI as well as the International category.

Statements by the likes of Independent MP Bob Katter, Christian preacher Peter Madden and former tennis champion Margaret Court were expected to feature heavily at the ceremony held to highlight the silliest and most shocking statements made about the GLBTI community in the past year.
