Police charge transgender person over Sydney train assault

Author // Serkan Ozturk Categories // News + Politics | New South Wales

A transgender person will face court next month over an alleged indecent assault of a teenager on a train last Thursday evening.

About 6pm on Thursday, February 16, a 17-year-old schoolboy and his friend were approached by a person while travelling on a train between Newtown and Redfern.

It is alleged that the transgender person made offensive comments to the teenager before indecently assaulting him.

Police attached to Redfern Local Area Command commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, after the 17-year-old and his friend got off the train at Redfern Station and reported the assault to officers nearby.

At about 1pm on Friday, February 17, police arrested a 43-year-old transgender person at Marrickville and charged them with assault and an act of indecency.

The person has been granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on March 12.

there are some glaring questions here with respects to identity, timing and relevance. As a trans person I found the whole thing a little disturbing if not some how irrelevant. Lets change the title to

"POLICE CHARGE BLACK / MUSLIM / GAY

    now my questions are:

    1. what was the source and why is it gay news?

2.. In what way is this transgender persons status relevant?

    3. The person was identified as "they" is this how this person identifies or was it assumed by SX?

I would question any Gay & Lesbian publication as to why, where, how for what?

SX we dont understand? Titillation, scandalous, fascination, sensationalism?

Doesn't SX a G&L publication that suggests it speaks for and includes the trans* community have a responsibility to report with a higher sense of compassion?

    and during MG season

    Hello there Indi,

This is from a police media report. They have chosen not to identify the person, I believe for privacy reasons, apart from mentioning that it was a 'transgender person'.

This is news because I would like to think that I would report it if the perpetrator and victim where reversed or whatever. It also happened in an area where there is a high LGBT population and is actually not far away from the SX offices. Sadly, sometimes I have to report the unpleasant as well. I will do my best to follow this case as it continues through the courts.

This story only got published on Monday as the police media report came in late Friday evening and I was away from the office.
