Dirty Queer Magazine spreads its wings
A recent local success story in DIY publishing, Dirty Queer Magazine will be launching its fourth issue this Friday night at a rambunctious ‘Queers in Wonderland’ party at Marrickville’s Red Rattler featuring a host of musical and design talent as well as Australia’s queen of burlesque, Imogen Kelly.
Since its first issue in September 2010, the magazine has garnered considerable support with readers and booksellers, both in Australia and overseas.
Based in Sydney, it showcases some of the best in queer photography, art and culture, along with local and international content.
Contributing editor Xavier Moustache says that while the community response to Dirty Queer Magazine has already been “overwhelming and amazing”, changes in the latest issue have been made to ensure a wider spread of ideas.
“The editorial team changed on issue 4 and we decided to take a more collaborative approach, inviting others to contribute.
“We have been so lucky to have contributions from photographer Amos Mac (Original Plumbing Magazine), queer burlesque star Lillian Starr and photographer Kellie Lafranchi,” Xavier says.
“It has really confirmed for us that there is a market for queer content; not gay, not straight but totally queer!”
Issue 4 of the magazine also features interviews with cabaret singer and artist Justin Vivian Bond, musician Peaches, DJ Kam Shafaati and performance duo Fancy Piece.
A launch party will be held on Friday, February 10 at the Red Rattler with the ‘Queers in Wonderland’ theme, including fantastic creatures created for the night by Justin Shoulder, tying in with the latest issue’s centrefold.
DJs Seymour Butz and The City Loves A Boyfriend, performance artist Pluto Savage and burlesque queen Kelly will all be performing at the event.
The team behind Dirty Queer Magazine will also be present at this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras Fair Day on Sunday, February 12 as they help man the ‘Queer Indie Publishers’ stall alongside Slit Magazine, Dude Trans Male Zine and the recently launched rural publication, The Den Magazine.
“We’re really excited to be doing the ‘Queer Indie Publishers’ stall at Fair Day again this year,” says contributing editor and photographer Morgan Carpenter.
“It’s great to be working together and building community.”
