Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon marries

Actress Cynthia Nixon has married partner Christine Marinoni in a New York ceremony over the weekend.

A rep for the Sex and the City star issued a statement to People magazine confirming the pair who have been together for eight years “were legally married in the state of New York” on Sunday, May 27.

It is believed Nixon, 46, wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera for the ceremony.

The couple became engaged in 2009 and decided they would not get married until same-sex marriage was legal in New York, which it has been since June last year.

Marinoni, a 45-year-old education activist, gave birth to the couple’s first child, Max, 15 months ago.

The newlyweds also look after Nixon’s two children from a previous relationship with photographer Danny Mozes.

Earlier this year in January, Nixon sparked worldwide headlines and was forced to make a clarification after an interview with the New York Times about how her homosexuality was a “choice”.

In a statement sent to US gay media publications soon after, the Tony Award winning actress said she meant that while her bisexuality was “a fact” and not a choice, her decision to be in a same-sex relationship was.

“While I don’t often use the word, the technically precise term for my orientation is bisexual,” she said at the time.  

“What I have ‘chosen’ is to be in a gay relationship.”
